What Can YOU Make From Pebbles…?

If you were in Brighton just before the Bank Holiday weekend you might just have spotted a rather unusual castle had been constructed on the seafront. Rather than being made from sand, this was made from pebbles. Not too strange I know; Brighton beach is full of pebbles. However THIS castle was made from Cadburys Pebbles – the new sugar coated chocolate snack. Not only are they delicious, but they are also a great shape for building things with, and if you have 90,000 you to can create a castle just like this one.

Yes there are 90,000 Pebbles here, a long with a quarter of a tonne of fondant icing and twenty kilos of icing sugar. Upon completion it weighed a massive half a tonne and was an incredible eight feet wide. It took 400 hours to build and was in position for just one day before being moved up to Cadburys World for the rest of the Bank Holiday.

What would YOU make with Pebbles? I managed to stack a few, without the assistance of fondant and icing sugar, but if I had some I’d probably try and replicate a famous landmark or building. Maybe the rather topical Walkie-Talkie Skyscraper in London would be a good one to try?

I’d love to hear what you’d make it you had 90,000 Pebbles!

Product Review: Sit & Go

With festival season well under way and the summer weather back for another go, long days out are becoming increasingly likely. So if you’re heading down to the beach for the day, going to a festival, heading to the Paralympics, or even taking up residence in the local park for an all day picnic, you’re going to need something to carry your food in. Picnics are brilliant as you always know what you are getting and wont have to battle the queues – or the inflated prices – by buying food when you arrive. You want something strong and sturdy, ideally that will keep your picnic nice and cool, and that’s easily transportable. What you need, is a Sit & Go.

Now I realise it looks a little bit like one of those shopping trolleys that you see elderly people dragging down the high street and around the supermarkets, but I assure you it is much cooler than that. Literally.

The bag itself is insulated meaning your food will stay nice and cool – or warm – in there as you pull it around the Olympic Park, or park it up on the beach or at your next music festival. Its very easy to move about and it stands up by itself. But this is no ordinary bag. Oh no. This bag is much cleverer than your average shopping bag. The Sit & Go comes with a fold down chair built in, and the Union Jack model comes with a parasol/umbrella too. You might not fancy sitting down on the floor, or you might have an elderly relative with you who just can’t sit down on the floor, so this chair is ready and available. You can sit in comfort whilst helping yourself to the food stored in the bag behind you.

This bag would also be great for an elderly person to do their weekly shop in. They could pull it up to the shops, store their food safely in it as they head home, and if they need a rest they have a chair with them so they can sit down for a while.

Perhaps you’re a frequent visitor of food fairs and shows which are often large and crowded with limited seating. You can buy all your tasty goodies without worrying about the carrying them or returning to the stands as you leave, and you’ll be able to take a seat for a well deserved cup of tea in comfort and style.

The Sit & Go would also be great at Wimbledon or at the cricket for some patriotic support, and I can see us using it this summer in the garden to keep drinks cold in during picnics or barbecues.

The Sit & Go is available now in four designs from the Direct To Your Door online store.

I love products that when you get them and use them you end up finding a million and one uses for them and you wonder how you ever survived without one. A Hammamas is such a product. What looks like a simple large cotton towel transforms into a multitude of uses, and all you need is a bit of imagination.

Hammamas are based on the traditional Turkish bath towel, and are available in a huge range of colours and patterns. Their generous size adds to their variety of uses.

First and foremost they make great towels. Absorbing water as fast as a traditional towel they dry super fast making them the perfect partner for bath time, visits to the swimming pool, or a dip in the sea. They are ideal for children as you can wrap them up in no time at all, making sure they don’t get too cold when they get out the water.

They are perfect for travelling. If you’re off on holiday take a Hammamas. They are compact enough to fit in your luggage, in the car, stored in a caravan, packed into the limited space of a boat or barge, they would even fit neatly into a tent. You could even use them if you’re off on your gap year and all you have is your rucksack.

A Hammamas makes  a great blanket. Whether you’re on the beach and want something to lie on, or your in the park or your own back garden having a picnic, a Hammamas is big enough to relax on. Perhaps you’re heading to a festival and want something to wrap around you in the cool evenings, or you might be planning a romantic evening on the beach watching the sunset. Get a Hammamas!

The perfect beachwear accessory. If you’re heading to warmer climes this summer – and to be fair who could blame you – travel light by using your Hammamas as beachwear. It makes an ideal sarong, and with a bit of creativity it can also be worn as a dress over your bikini – great when heading away from the beach for lunch.

Home decoration with a Hammamas. Whether you’re dining inside or out this summer you might want to put a tablecloth down. Use your Hammamas. Thrown over a table – especially a wooden table in the garden – the Hammamas looks amazing, and it protects your table and adds some colour to the occasion. And you don’t to worry about spillages as they can be thrown in the washing machine at 40 degrees and will be dry in no time.

You can view the extensive range online at the Hammamas store.

Hurrah!! Summer has FINALLY put in an appearance, and fingers crossed its going to stick around for a while yet. If you’re planning on relaxing in the garden or on the beach, or if you’re having evening barbecues or garden parties, or you might be boarding a long haul flight to somewhere where you can guarantee the good weather, an Alpaca Travel Shawl might well become your new best friend.

A silky soft mix of Alpaca and Bamboo makes this shawl super light and hypo-allergenic. It is perfect for wrapping around your shoulders as the evening gets cooler, or to use as a blanket whilst on board a flight. The shawl comes in a gorgeous matching cover which turns it into a cute bolster cushion, which is great for resting your head on in the garden or on the beach when you’re sunbathing, or as a small pillow if you’re travelling.

The shawl is a great size at 90x190cm and for me its ideal as it makes the shawl very versatile. I love that its made from Alpaca which is great against sensitive or delicate skin, meaning you could even use it as a blanket to lie your little one’s on, or to cover them if they are asleep in the car. Being Alpaca also makes it incredibly strong and long lasting, so you’ll be investing in a piece that will last you for years to come. The shawl comes in eight colours so you’re bound to find one to suit, whether it be for day to day use or for a special occasion like a wedding or christening.

Alpaca Travel Shawls are available now direct from the Samantha Holmes website where you’ll also find a range of beautifully made fashion and home accessories.

Bagabooks are designed to protect your precious paperbacks from damage when you’re reading them if you’re out and about. Whether you’re travelling by train or plane, or sat on a warm sandy beach (clearly not in the UK…) or just like to have your book with you in case you fancy a quick read, your paperback may end up a little dog-eared and damaged. Bagabook to the rescue!!

Bagabooks slip around the cover of your book and protect it from the elements. They come with a built in bookmark and a handy pocket for a travel card or train ticket – perfect for all you commuters out there. There is even a pen holder as your Bagabook can also house a notepad or diary. You can even fit an e-reader or 7 inch tablet inside – and that’s why I’m bringing my Bagabook to Brit Mums Live this weekend with my new Kurio inside. As you all know I’m going to be showing off the pre-release 7 inch Kurio to anyone who wants a look, but I am also going to be running a competition to giveaway a brand new Bagabook of your choice.

Bagabooks come in two designs – Classic or Executive. The Classics look rather like a stylish handbag, with a strap to pop it over your shoulder or carry it.

The Executive has a briefcase look to it with a much shorter and neater handle, and has a discreet zipped pocket to pop in your mobile or mp3 player or some loose change.
Take a look at the full range on the Bagabook website – there are a host of colours and designs to choose from.

Fancy winning one of your own?

Track me down on Friday or Saturday at Brit Mums Live and give me one of your business cards.  You’ll be entered into a Prize Draw and on Sunday I’ll pick one of the cards out of a hat – or the discreet hidden pocket of the Bagabook – and that person will win a Bagabook of their choice from the website. What’s more is that ALL entrants will be emailed with a discount code to use in the online store.

Summer Holiday Essentials: Protection

Good quality sun cream that is quick and easy to apply to wriggling children is what we all dream of isn’t it? When the sun is out protecting our children’s delicate skin is essential, but getting it on them is often tricky and they are generally left covered in a sticky cream which rubs off on clothes and furniture. I was looking for something easy to apply which dried quickly and provided great protection for my Little Man. Getting sun cream on him has become increasingly difficult as he’s gotten older, but I have found a great product that does the trick – Sudocrem Sunscreen Mousse.
Being a mousse its really easy to apply and it dries almost instantly. As well as providing SPF 50 sun protection it is also water proof and resistant to towel drying, and offers protection from irritation caused by salt, chlorine and wind burn, making it perfect for use on the beach or by the pool. Being Sudocrem you can also rely on it leaving your child’s skin in the best possible condition – soft and smooth, and able to breath as the mousse doesn’t block pores like cream.

We took this with us on holiday to Devon recently and it was great. I kept it in my bag when we went out and I was able to apply it really quickly. Little Man thought the mousse squirting out the pump was fascinating so was happy for me to cover him in it. We also used it at home during the recent heat wave and sunny fortnight. My Little Man’s skin has remained safe in the sun and has never had that greasy feel you tend to get with creams.

Sudocrem Sunscreen Mousse is available from all good Pharmacies.

Supporting British Industry : Radley Handbags

By now you’ll be under the impression I have some kind of bag fetish… and you’d be right. The three large boxes of handbags under my bed is proof of that, along with the large number of changing bags I own. When I’m not in Mummy Mode and I have a rare day off, or I’m at a Blogging or Press Event I like the fact that I can dust off an old favoured handbag and use something that doesn’t come with insulated bottle holders or a changing mat.

Though I don’t own many of them – two I believe – the iconic Radley brand is by far my favourite when it comes to handbags. I’m sure several of you remember me for my Radley handbag at Cybermummy last year if not for anything else – it had cupcakes on. 2012 is a very British year, and what better way to support British industry than buying a Radley handbag? Yes, I know – any excuse!!

Radley has a lovely range of bags out this summer and I am a big fan of the “Great British Summer” collection – the perfect addition to any outfit and event this very British summer. So if you’re heading out to a Jubilee Street Party, or making your way to the Olympic Park, or perhaps hiding on the beach from all the excitement, you’re bound to find one that’s just what you need. Here are a few of my favourites to whet your appetite.

“Large Tote Bag” £99
Wherever you find yourself this summer, this is the bag for every occasion.  This tote is big enough to carry all your party or beach essentials – or just your bits and pieces when you’re out shopping – and looks amazing. Featuring the iconic Radley dog tag in a very patriotic red and some super-cute Union Jack bunting, this bag is going to take you from event to event all summer long.

“Large Tote Bag” £9
These bags are great for heading down to the shops to top up on party food for your summer celebrations. Using these instead of plastic bags not only saves the planet, but also looks cool. The Radley  dog gets a very British makeover here in a bright Union Jack pattern which is sure to stand out from the crowds.  And at just £9 you can ‘Rule Britannia’ without breaking the bank.

“Medium Zip Wallet” £45
With the perfect British handbag comes need for a British purse, so look no further than this bright red design. This wallet holds 10 credit cards, has a section for notes and a zipped section for coins. This will last as a permanent reminder of the summer and will go beautifully with any handbag, especially a Radley!

So come on ladies – lets celebrate this very British Summer with a great British brand!

Summer Holiday Essentials: Picos Pack Pacapod

Summer has FINALLY arrived and no doubt you’re all thinking about your holidays. Whether you’re staying at home, taking a UK break, or jetting off somewhere further afield it is essential to pack the right things for your little ones. This is the first in a series of “Summer Holiday Essentials” which I think will make your holidays that little bit easier.

A good changing bag is one of the most important purchases for any parent. I’ve featured a couple on my blog in the past year, but I was looking for something that was practical and would fit in with an outdoors lifestyle. Country walks, trips to National Trust Gardens, a day at the beach, visiting a theme park or farm – these are all activities you might be undertaking this summer. You still need to make sure you’ve got everything you need for your little one though, and that probably includes nappies, wipes, snacks, drinks, toys, books, and a hundred and one other items too. You need a bag that can hold all these things, and you need to be able to put your hands on them at a moments notice, ideally a few seconds before your little one requests them!

Our first ever changing bag was a black Pacapod, and it remains a favourite to this day – especially with my husband who isn’t a fan of my somewhat feminine Mia Tui bag.  We have found a new favourite in the Picos Pack from Pacapod.

This rucksack style changing bag is ideal for trips out where you are doing a lot of walking, or perhaps can’t take the pram in to attach your bag to, and are instead using a sling or carrier for your child.  We have used it a lot in recent months and it was indispensable on our recent holiday to Devon. As is a feature of all Pacapod changing bags, the Picos Pack comes with two internal “pods” – a feeder pod which is insulated and a changer pod with pockets and spaces for all your nappy changing needs.  There are also two external pockets to carry drinks bottles in, and a front zip pocket which can hold keys, wallets and other items. With the two pods inside the main bag there is still room for other bits to be slipped in – we took this bag to the Eden Project with us recently and packed it full of picnic food for four adults and a toddler, and there was just about room! It really is a tardis! Even better is that it survived a rather epic downpour whilst we were outside the Bio-domes, and came home unscathed.

What I love about Pacapods is that you can always go straight to whatever you need because everything has its own place, and your know that as long as your pods are full, that you’ve got everything you need. Toy Pods are available separately and can be used in exchange for one of the other pods, depending on your needs that day.

The full Pacapod range, including the brilliant Picos Pack, is available now from the Pacapod website.

Sun Awareness Week – 30th April to May 6th

I know, its a little ironic what with the deluge of rain that’s fallen in recent weeks, but this week is in fact Sun Awareness Week. Staying safe in the sun is important for everyone, but for young children with delicate skin its essential. Taking good precautions from an early age is vital in ensuring a lifetime of healthy skin. Young children are amazing at picking up phrases or mimicking actions, so why not take the time to ensure they learn the importance of protecting themselves from the sun this Sun Awareness Week… or next time its stops raining!

A recent survey by Cuddledry highlighted major concerns about parents awareness of the danger of the sun, and what counts as appropriate protection. 85% of respondents believed that just keeping your child covered up in clothing provided BETTER protection than an SPF 30 sun cream. In reality most children’s clothing provided a meagre SPF 15 protection, meaning your child’s skin can still get damaged through what they are wearing.

For safety in the sun SPF 30 should be worn along with sun protection clothing, so the team at Cuddledry have designed a new Sun Protection Poncho Towel which is perfect for use by the pool, on the beach and during the holidays. The fabric uses a patented Rayosan(TM) technology that coats the towel and acts like a mirror, reflecting the harmful rays away from your child and provides a protection factor of up to 50+. They also incorporate the familiar Cuddledry signature cotton and bamboo fibre, which means its super absorbent and soft next to your child’s skin. The ponchos also have poppers under the arms so you can make it have sleeves so its more likely to stay on, making it a great outfit to throw on throughout the holiday season.

The SPF 50+ Ponchos are available now direct from the Cuddledry website in a choice of two colours – Lilac & Cherry or Aqua & Turquoise.

John Lewis Opens First Store In Sussex

Retail giant John Lewis is opening its first ever store in Sussex on Thursday with a “John Lewis At Home” store on the Portfield Way Retail Park, just outside Chichester. I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview on Tuesday and take a tour around the new store with branch manager Claire.

Boasting 40,000 square feet of selling space over two floors this new store has a wide range of products you’d commonly find within their bigger shops. There is a large selection of home décor and furnishing, as well as an extensive kitchen and lighting section.

Downstairs you will find the Click & Collect Service which makes shopping even easier – you just order the item and collect it from store the next day, and the only selection of Olympic Merchandising outside of a London branch. Perfect if you want to grab yourself a piece of memorabilia for this summers event without having to fight your way into the capital.

Jubilee fever has also struck with a number of Union Jack emblazoned products throughout the store from cushions to deck chairs and food gifts – I can highly recommend the Emma Bridgewater Biscuit Barrel!

Upstairs you will find a comprehensive electrical and gadgetry department which includes the brand new iPad and a number of TV’s – ideal distraction for the men! You will also find a small but well stocked baby section to pick up a few nursery essentials for your little ones, including cots, toys and a bedding.

The familiar John Lewis cafe is also upstairs where they’ll be selling a range of drinks, snacks and light lunches, as well as children’s lunch boxes. A supply of high chairs is ready and waiting! Customer toilets can also be found nearby along with spacious baby changing facilities, and a feeding room – something which is rare even on the high street!

One of my favourite “trends” on offer in John Lewis At Home is the ‘Playnation’ range. Here is the foyer of the new store, decked out in the range.

Can you believe that colourful book display is actually wallpaper? I love it and definitely want some for our home office!!

The ‘Playnation’ range is beautifully bright and encompasses a huge selection of products from table ware to garden items, home decor to office organisation. The mix of wood and colour looks brilliant and I can imagine several pieces finding a place in my home soon. Here are a few of my personal favourites:

This Tiffin Box would be great on family picnics this summer with four handy compartments for your lunch time favourites.

Office storage needn’t be dull with this brightly coloured unit featuring six large deep drawers.

Every cook and baker needs a good set of measuring spoons and I love this set of four – colourful additions to any kitchen.

Summer trips to the beach or just sitting in the garden will be stylish and comfortable for your little ones in this traditional deck chair.

John Lewis At Home opens on Thursday April 5th and with the extended Easter weekend it’s sure to be a busy one – I suggest you start queuing now!!
