Oak Smoked Rapeseed Oil
The Rape for this oil is grown, harvested and cold pressed on the same farm in Sussex, so this is a very exciting local product. Rapeseed oil is one of the most healthy oils for your heart so is a great addition to any kitchen. Recommended by My Secret Kitchen to use in sauces, dressings and as a simple bread dipper its also really versatile. I used this oil last weekend by brushing it over the skin of a chicken I was roasting. I usually use butter or olive oil but this gave a great smoky taste to the chicken and the smell was mouthwatering.

Secret Firecracker Chilli Spices
This product is not for the fainthearted! 1/4 of a teaspoon of this will give you the same heat as one small red chilli, but at the same time it will give you the added flavour of cayenne pepper, cumin, garlic and Mexican oregano. This is going to be a great addition to homemade chilli con carne. The spice contains the “holy trinity” of Mexican chillies – ancho, pasilla and guajillo – giving it an unmistakably hot and fruity chilli flavour. Recipe suggestions for this include Chilli Lemon Chicken, Spicy Salsa, and Spicy Buffalo Sauce.

Maple Caramel Sauce
Just the name of this product should have you licking your lips. Liquid caramel mixed with a hint of warm maple syrup this sauce is divine. It tastes amazing on pancakes especially with bananas, and  makes plain vanilla ice cream heavenly just by being drizzled over it. It would also make a great topping to a sundae. In fact I think this sauce would be delicious on most desserts. Or you could just dig in and eat it by the spoonful, straight from the jar.

Secret Vanilla Pudding Spices
This spice combines vanilla with cinnamon, ground coriander seed and ginger making it a delightful sweet and spicy addition to cupboard. The secret ingredient is roasted cassia. This spice is delicious dusted on top of hot chocolates, but I think it would also be tasty on french toast or freshly made doughnuts. Mixed in to warm sponge puddings, added in to apple pies, or sprinkled over popcorn this spice will add a warming sweet flavour to a host of desserts, cakes and sweet treats. This spice should be a store cupboard staple for any keen baker.

Book Review: “A Passion For Baking” by Jo Wheatley

I love baking. It’s something I’ve enjoyed doing since I was little and used to “help” my Mum in the kitchen. Now I’m a Mum myself finding the time to bake does prove tricky. I can’t wait until Little Man is old enough to join in, though I don’t look forward to cleaning up afterwards! When I do find the time – usually at weekends when Daddy takes over – there’s nothing I enjoy more than whipping up a cake or a batch of biscuits for my little family to enjoy, and this book is perfect for doing just that.

Available exclusively at Sainsburys for a bargain price of £7.99 “A Passion For Baking” is the debut book from the winner of The Great British Bake Off Jo Wheatley. Whenever I get a new cookbook – and yes, I own a ridiculous number – I flick through it immediately to see what stands out for me. After a few moments of flicking through the pages of “A Passion For Baking” I was salivating. Not only does this book contain loads of recipes that I actually want to make, but the photography makes me want to make them right now! Page after page of beautifully photographed food, either as a completed bake or as partial ingredients, makes this book a visual feast. My personal favourites are the photos of the Mini Mississippi Mud Pies and the Raspberry Torte. But this book contains so many recipes which I can’t wait to try out on my family.

For Fathers Day this year we had Jo’s American Pancakes with some fresh fruit. My Husband and I have been to the USA twice – once when we’d been dating a year, and again for our honeymoon – and on both occasions visited New York. Our main memory from these visits is the food – mostly the sheer size of it – but specifically the breakfasts. Nothing started the day better than a stack of pancakes, more often than not with maple syrup and some crispy bacon. Jo’s American Pancakes are JUST as delicious, and brought back amazing memories. They were light and fluffy, and super easy to make. I can see them being made again and again in our house for years to come.

Baking conjures up so many memories for me, and I look forward to making lots of new ones with my Little Man, and this book.

Product Launch: Philadelphia… with chocolate!

Yes you did read that right – chocolate.

On Monday this week Kraft announced their new flavour of Philadelphia at an event in Central London and invited some bloggers along to try it out. I think I can confidently say we were all a little surprised when we found out it was chocolate – general consensus beforehand was another savoury option – so it was with some trepidation we stepped forward to try it out.

Delicious!! Seriously!! I mean who is going to dislike anything with Cadbury chocolate in it? Certainly not me! It maintained the light cool consistency of Original Philadelphia but tasted decadently of Cadbury. A win, win situation in my book! I find other leading chocolate spreads quite thick to eat, but this was much nicer. And if you want to feel even better about the idea of Cadbury flavoured Philadelphia: it is a mere 86 calories per serving and has less than half the fat and less sugar than other leading chocolate spreads.

As well as tasting delicious and being (almost) good for you, Philadelphia with Cadbury is hugely versatile. Spread it on toast, a bage, a croissant or a biscuit. Smoother your pancakes in it this Shrove Tuesday. Make Chocolate Cheesecakes out of it. Use it to ice cupcakes or as a filling in sponge cakes. Dip fruit in it. Eat it straight from the tub with a spoon… just me? Oh.

Philadelphia with Cadbury is available now from most good supermarkets. It is being launched this week so will hopefully make it to a store near you soon. It is available in standard 160g tub size as well as 4x30g mini-tubs.
